South of Midnight is a third person action-adventure game set in the American Deep South. The game tells a dark modern folktale and is driven by a rich narrative, unique moody art direction, and deep thematic gameplay elements. We like to refer to the game as ‘wide linear’ with some explorable areas but gated to require completion of the story in that area before moving on to the next.
Anyone interested in a novel fantasy mythos with deeply thematic gameplay. Players who enjoy thoughtful yet dynamic gameplay experiences.
As Hazel, you will explore the mythos and encounter creatures of southern folklore in a macabre and fantastical world. When disaster strikes her hometown, Hazel is called to become a weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits. Imbued with these new abilities, Hazel will confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family's shared past and -if she's lucky - find her way to a place that feels like home.
The game is currently planned to be available on Xbox Series X l S, Windows 10/11, and Steam.
We have no official launch date yet.
We are actively working on the game and can’t wait to show you official gameplay footage when it is ready. Stay tuned!
Yes, South of Midnight will be available day one with Xbox Game Pass.
South of Midnight comes from our will to explore the supernatural stories, urban legends, and mysterious places of the Deep South. As a folktale for modern times, the game is inspired by equal parts stories about fantastic creatures and a setting that inspired stories about those creatures. Magic realism allows a lot of latitude when it comes to creating unusual concepts, but it also requires you to present these concepts in a recognizable, relatable world. In addition to having team members who grew up in the South, we collaborated with cultural and narrative experts who are also from the South and helped us create the locations, characters, and stories.
The best way to support South of Midnight is to Wishlist it! You can also follow us on our Compulsion Games social media to get updates on the studio and on the game.
Yes, most of the core team from We Happy Few have transitioned to South of Midnight. To fully realize our vision for South of Midnight, we expanded the team to 80 full-time members! We are still closely- knit and working from our studio located in Montreal, Canada.
We like to build new worlds based on a fictional/alternate reality. We enjoy telling compelling stories with unconventional characters. We have a very strong art team that likes exploring original, stylish, and moody artistic directions. Our gameplay is usually thematized to our world and narrative to drive a strong cohesive fantasy.
