2014 In Review

Hello everyone!

As some of you noticed, the old website kicked the bucket recently, and so it has been difficult to update everyone with any Contrast or Compulsion-related news.  So, as we've been very slack on blog posting, this post will recap our major highlights from 2014.  It’s like ESPN, except about video games, and also it’s not a highlight reel or some sort of sports celebrity scandal.

Launched on Xbox One

On 26 June 2014, we launched the Xbox One version of Contrast.  It took us a little while to get it right, and navigate the Microsoft submission process, so in the end it released 6 months later than the other versions of the game.  But, because we had extra time to complete it, we were able to create a version that we were really happy with.  So far, Xbox One players have been really positive, and we’re glad to have fulfilled our promise to bring Contrast to you guys.

Canadian Videogame Awards

Deep into the Canadian autumn, and almost a year after being nominated, we travelled to Toronto on November 21 2014 to attend the 2013 Canadian Videogame Awards (they had two awards shows in 2014, relating to games from both 2013 and 2014).  Contrast was nominated in 10/18 categories in 2013, being pitted against such giants as Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag) and Warner Brothers (Arkham Origins), and good friends such as Red Barrels and Drinkbox.  We didn’t actually expect to win anything, given that, well, Ubisoft is Ubisoft, but we went along to celebrate all the awesome games that have come out of Canada recently, and catch up with some old friends (including the PixelNauts, and Elias Toufexis, the always gritty voice of Johnny from Contrast, among other less well known titles such as Deus Ex: HR…).

However, much to our surprise, we did not walk away empty handed!  As the crowd grew hushed and the winner was read out, Contrast won Best Game Innovation of 2013.  Guillaume went up on stage, and calmly stated that indie development is the best thing in the world, swearing profusely in front of 100,000 live twitch viewers, which was definitely the highlight of the night for us!  We were subsequently told off by none other than Commander Shepard of the Normandy (Marc Meer was the host of the show), after a few others decided to follow our lead.

Ooh look, a fancy graphic

We’re really proud of Contrast, and of each other, and (because we forgot on the night) we want to thank everyone that believed in us, helped us work on Contrast, and played our game.

Other More Office-y Stuff

Otherwise, we have been keeping a low profile this year.  The main highlights have been:

  • Expanding the office (blew a hole in the wall, to be precise), so that we weren’t jumping on each other’s’ toes any more, and even adding a mini kitchen:

Camille Building a Kitchen

Otherwise, we've just been ridiculously busy, but we're feeling like 2015 is going to be awesome.

Thanks for all your kind words, hellos and “where the bloody hell are you”s in 2014.  It means a great deal to us that you enjoyed Contrast so much.  We’re looking forward to a busy 2015, and actually talking properly to you all on our new forums.

- Sam
